Refraction – Breakin' Glass
Refraction – Breakin' Glass is a 2013 jazz album by Trio 3—Oliver Lake on sax, Reggie Workman on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums—with guest pianist Jason Moran. It was recorded in July 2012 at Brooklyn Recording Studio in Brooklyn and released by Intakt Records. The project grew from a week-long Moran residency at New York’s Birdland, making him the third guest pianist to work with Trio 3 after Irène Schweizer and Geri Allen.
The set blends Moran’s composition "Refraction" with Lake’s spoken-word piece "Breakin’ Glass," and includes Cyrille’s "High Priest," a tribute to the late saxophonist David S. Ware. Critics praised the group’s telepathic interplay and Moran’s well-integrated, inventive presence. Reviews highlighted the music’s mix of dense, exploratory textures and accessible tunes, noting Moran’s knack for providing engaging hooks and fluid solos within both prescribed and open formats. The collaboration is described as a compelling blend of classic free jazz form and spontaneous invention, with a strong sense of shape amid improvisational energy.
