Raymond D. Kell, often called Ray Kell, was an American television researcher for RCA. He helped develop color TV and won the Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1948 for his pioneering work. Kell was born June 7, 1904, in Kell, Illinois, and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1926. From 1927 to 1930 he did television research at General Electric’s radio consulting laboratory, then worked in RCA’s research division (1930–1941) and RCA Laboratories (from 1941). He received a Modern Pioneer award from the National Association of Manufacturers in February 1940 for inventions in television. Kell died November 2, 1986, in Mesa, Arizona, at age 82.
