Freshwater crabs of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a tropical island near the southern tip of India. It has many invertebrates, including freshwater crabs.

Taxonomy: Phylum Arthropoda; Subphylum Crustacea; Class Malacostraca; Order Decapoda.

Sri Lanka’s freshwater crabs are important because all of them are endemic to the island. There are 51 known species, in five genera, and all are found only in Sri Lanka.

About 98% of these crabs are threatened, endangered, or critically endangered due to habitat loss, capture for food, illegal collecting, and exotic species.
