Prien (river)

The Prien is a river in Bavaria, Germany. It starts on the Spitzstein at about 1,150 metres above sea level and flows for about 33 kilometres. It ends in the Chiemsee at the Schafwaschener Bucht. The Prien is one of the longest mountain streams in the Bavarian Alps. The name probably comes from the Celtic Brigenna, meaning “from the mountains.” The town Prien am Chiemsee is named after the river. Near its beginning a weir feeds the Mühlbach, which flows separately into the Chiemsee farther south. The Prien is the second largest tributary to the Chiemsee after the Tiroler Achen.
