Praia do Norte
Praia do Norte is a small civil parish in the municipality of Horta on Faial island, in the Azores of Portugal. It sits on the northern coast between Cedros and Capelo. In 2011 about 250 people lived there, making it the island’s least populous parish. The area includes the places Cerca, Fajã and Praia do Norte, and it’s reached by the regional road from Horta.
The parish was first noted in 1567 and had fertile lands that grew cereals, beans and fruit. By 1643 there were about 274 residents in 77 homes. The Cabeço do Fogo volcano erupted in 1672, destroying the original church and sending lava across the coast. Many residents left, and the parish later became part of Capelo. A niche now marks the spot of the old church.
A chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Penha de França was built in 1787 in Fajã da Praia, and another chapel to Nossa Senhora das Dores was built in 1797 after the 1672 destruction (and rebuilt after the Capelinhos eruption). The civil parish status was restored in 1839 and formally confirmed in 1845.
The Capelinhos eruption of 1957–58 brought earthquakes and ash, destroying the Nossa Senhora das Dores church and prompting many residents to emigrate to the United States and Canada. In the mid-20th century, vineyards faced pests and crops were damaged. A new modernist church was built in 1961.
In 2005, the container ship CP Valour ran aground near Praia do Fajã, causing an oil spill that affected the bay and the beach.
Geographically, Praia do Norte sits in the Capelo volcanic area, with a coastline featuring a fajã—a flat piece of land created by lava and debris that extends toward the sea. The sheltered bay is bordered by steep cliffs and Laurisilva forest. The area has wine cellars and a mix of summer homes and farms. Today the economy includes cattle and dairy farming, fishing, some boat building and rock/sand extraction; tourism is modest but the scenery draws visitors.
The parish celebrates Nossa Senhora das Dores as its patron, with a feast on the Sunday after September 15. In the Fajã, St. Peter’s Day is on June 29, and Our Lady of Penafrancia is celebrated on September 8 at the chapel built in 1787. Local dishes include pork stew, regional wine, and traditional corn flatbread.
