Platyoposaurus was a large, ancient amphibian that lived in the Middle Permian period, about 270–268 million years ago. It belonged to the temnospondyls, a group of early amphibians. The genus includes several species, such as P. rickardi (the type species, originally named Platyops rickardi), P. stuckenbergi, and P. watsoni. One known specimen has a skull about 28 cm long and an estimated body length of around 2.5 meters, suggesting it was a carnivore. Fossils have been found in Belebey, Bashkortostan, Russia. The name means "flat-faced lizard" and was chosen after the original name Platyops was already in use for another animal.
