Phulwari Sharif
Phulwari Sharif is a town and block in Patna district, Bihar, India. It’s part of the Patna Metropolitan Region and is one of the fastest‑growing parts of urban Patna. The area has historical ties to Sufi culture and is known for its Islamic dargah (shrine) and old mosques. All‑India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna (AIIMS Patna) is located in Phulwari Sharif.
Phulwari Sharif is largely Muslim in population and is well connected by road and rail. It sits on National Highway 139 along the AIIMS Road in Patna. A major transport complex called Parivahan Parisar, behind the Phulwari Sharif jail, serves Patna city and intercity buses; it opened in May 2023. The Phulwari Sharif railway station links the town to many parts of the country, and the nearby Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport in Patna provides air connections to other cities.
Population and literacy (based on the 2011 census): 81,740 people (42,840 males and 38,900 females) with 12,186 children aged 0–6. There were 13,404 households. The literacy rate was 67.6% overall (71.6% for males and 63.2% for females); the effective literacy rate for people aged 7 and above was 79.5% (83.8% for males and 74.6% for females). Scheduled Castes numbered 6,561, and Scheduled Tribes 141.
Administratively, Phulwari Sharif is part of Patna Sadar subdivision and is expected to come under the Patna Municipal Corporation as part of the Greater Patna plan. The MLA since 2020 is Gopal Ravidas of the CPI(ML) Liberation, and Phulwari Sharif falls under the Pataliputra Lok Sabha constituency.
