Philippia is no longer recognized as a separate genus; it is now treated as a synonym of Erica in the plant family Ericaceae. Its species ranged from southern Africa to tropical Africa, including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. Philippia was a distinctive Afromontane group in southern and eastern Africa, living in montane forests and shrublands. The name Philippia honors Rodolfo Amando Philippi (1808–1904), a German–Chilean paleontologist and zoologist.
