John Adam Hugo
John Adam Hugo (1873–1945) was an American composer and pianist from Bridgeport, Connecticut. He studied at the Stuttgart Conservatory from 1888 to 1897, with teachers including Wilhelm Speidel, Immanuel Faisst, Árpád Doppler, and Hermann Zumpe. He worked as a concert pianist in Germany, England, and Italy before returning to the United States in 1899. In Baltimore, he taught piano at the Peabody Institute for a year, then served as director of the European Conservatory and of its Woman’s College from 1901 to 1906. After that, he worked as a private piano teacher in Baltimore. Hugo later returned to Bridgeport, where he died. He wrote three operas, including The Temple Dancer, which was performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1919; the other two operas were The Hero of Byzanz and The Sun God. He also composed a symphony, two piano concertos, chamber music, and many songs.
