Philip Martin Brown is an English actor born on 9 July 1956 in Manchester, England. He is best known for playing English teacher Grantly Budgen in the BBC One drama Waterloo Road, from March 2006 to October 2013, appearing in 154 episodes and becoming the show’s longest-serving cast member.

Throughout his career, Brown has appeared in many British series including The Professionals, Cutting It, The Bill (as Seth Mercer), Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, New Tricks and Doctors. His notable drama roles also include Eddie Vincent in Casualty (2002–2003), John Adams in The Bounty (1984) and a part in Sharpe’s Justice (1997). He had a detective role in Rosemary & Thyme and appeared in a Skins online episode (2012) as a drug dealer. He briefly appeared in Sleepy Hollow (1999). In Coronation Street, he played Steve McDonald’s therapist in 2015, after first appearing as D.I. Pinnock in 2005. He also starred as Algernon Rowan-Webb in The Worst Witch (2017). In 2021, Brown appeared in Doctors as Marvin Bulis.

Brown attended Barrow-in-Furness Grammar School for Boys, where he was asked to leave in his fifth year, later calling himself a “dreadful troublemaker.” He lives in Paddock Wood, Kent, with his wife Pip Brown and their two children. He was nominated for Best Actor at the TV Choice Awards in 2010 and won Best Actor for three consecutive years. Brown was diagnosed with epilepsy at 19 and is an ambassador for the charity Young Epilepsy; he later had brain surgery and has been seizure-free for about 22 years.
