Perdido Key State Park
Perdido Key State Park
Perdido Key State Park is a 247-acre Florida State Park on a barrier island about 15 miles southwest of Pensacola. It’s off State Road 292, and the park’s address is 12301 Gulf Beach Highway. Barrier islands protect the mainland from storms and provide homes for shorebirds and other coastal animals. The park has wide white-sand beaches, rolling sand dunes, and sea oats, making it a peaceful spot in the Florida Panhandle.
The beach is the main attraction, great for swimming and sunbathing, and surf fishing is popular too. Boardwalks from the parking lot help visitors reach the beach without disturbing the dunes, and there are covered picnic tables for groups.
Endangered species: Perdido Key beach mice are among North America’s rarest mammals and exist only in two places, including Perdido Key. The mice were reintroduced to the park in 2000. Their numbers vary with season, weather, and the presence of house cats.
Sea turtles nest here as well. Loggerhead turtles nest every year, and green and Kemp’s Ridley turtles nest occasionally within the park boundaries.
The park is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
