Itaí
Itaí is a municipality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It has about 27,382 residents (2020) and covers around 1,083 square kilometers. The town sits about 614 meters above sea level. The name Itaí comes from the Tupi language and means "river stone." The Tropic of Capricorn crosses the area.
Its history starts in the 1860s–1870s when farmers settled near a chapel, forming Santo Antônio da Ponta da Serra. The parish Santo Antônio da Boa Vista was created on April 16, 1874. It became a village in 1891, a city in 1906, and was renamed Itaí in 1920. The town grew around the Carrapatos river and nearby areas, including Bom Sucesso (now Paranapanema).
Itaí is served by Vivo (Telefônica) for phones, internet, and TV. People from Itaí are called Itaíenses. The postal code is 18730-000 and the area code is 14. The current mayor (2021–2024) is José Ramiro Antunes do Prado (PSDB).
