Percy Butler (American football)
Percy Butler III (born May 29, 2000) is an American football safety and special teams player for the Washington Commanders in the NFL. He grew up in Plaquemine, Louisiana, and played at Plaquemine High School, where he was a wide receiver and defensive back and earned second-team all-state as a senior. He also ran track. Butler played college football for Louisiana (the Ragin' Cajuns) and earned second-team All-Sun Belt as a senior after recording 61 tackles, three fumble recoveries and an interception.
The Commanders drafted him in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft and he signed a four-year rookie contract on June 21, 2022. In his rookie season, he appeared in 15 games with 11 tackles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
In 2023, he became the starting free safety in Week 6 after Darrick Forrest was placed on injured reserve. He played 15 games with 13 starts, totaling 35 tackles, eight passes defensed and one forced fumble. He was placed on injured reserve on December 30, 2023, due to a wrist injury.
In 2024, Butler mainly contributed on special teams and as a backup safety behind starters Quan Martin and Jeremy Chinn. He played all 17 regular-season games with five starts, recording 47 tackles and one pass defensed.
On July 25, 2025, Butler signed a one-year contract extension with the Commanders. Through 2025, his career totals include 136 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 10 passes defensed.
