People Power Company
People Power Company is an American technology company that builds software and mobile apps for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is best known for Presence, an app that turns unused smartphones and tablets into home-monitoring cameras and energy-management tools. Presence can record video or audio when it detects movement, send clips to your current phone, monitor energy use, and control third‑party internet-connected devices. It works on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and Android.
The company was founded in January 2009 in Palo Alto, California by Gene Wang (CEO) and David Moss (CTO) and launched Presence in November 2009. It started as a greentech and energy-efficiency company, and in 2013 released Presence to repurpose older devices as home sensors. In 2014, energy-efficiency pilots in Cape Cod and Oahu showed about 10% monthly energy savings.
John Teeter, the chief scientist, became a Presidential Innovation Fellow in 2013 and later worked on the Green Button initiative to give home energy data to consumers. In 2015, People Power raised $4.4 million in a Series B led by MediaTek, bringing total funding to $12 million. The company has received several industry honors, including Gartner’s 2017 Cool Vendors in Connected Home, and awards from SIIA, AESP, AT&T, GE, and Gigaom.
People Power also provides IoT services to consumer service providers and continues to develop its Presence platform for home security and energy management.
