Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes is a 2004 American independent superhero comedy directed by Mike Donahue. Written by Vincent J. Roth, who also stars as Gavin Lucas, a corporate attorney and comic book fan who gains superpowers after a lab accident involving scientist Ronald Richards and his former partner Hector Harris. With Richards’ reluctant help, Gavin builds a battle suit and becomes the superhero Surge of Power to defend Big City. Harris, transformed by the same accident, gains the power to control metal and becomes the villain Metal Master. The two sides clash in a final showdown.

Vincent J. Roth conceived the idea of a superhero story with a gay lead, and he wrote the script, served as executive producer, and acted in the film. The project was produced by Roth along with Mike Donahue, Ray Quiroga, and Tom Tangen. Filmed mainly in California, the movie used early-2000s digital effects and relied on community support, volunteers, and rented sets. It includes cameos from notable figures in science fiction and comics to connect with fan culture.

Surge of Power premiered at film festivals in 2004, had a limited theatrical release in March 2006, and released on DVD in May 2006. It later appeared on streaming platforms, including Netflix between 2009 and 2013. The film received mixed reviews, with critics noting the low budget, simple effects, and performances below mainstream standards, but some appreciated its cultural significance as an early example of an openly gay superhero. The movie launched the Surge of Power franchise and was followed by the 2018 sequel Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel.
