Pedro Sainz Rodríguez
Pedro Sainz Rodríguez (14 January 1897 – 14 December 1986) was a Spanish writer, philologist, publisher and politician. He advised Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona, and was a leading figure in the monarchist wing of the early Franco era. He is seen as one of the main architects of the reign of Juan Carlos I and Spain’s transition to democracy.
Known for his quick wit and large frame, Sainz Rodríguez began as an academic in philology and as a student of Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo. He became an expert on Golden Age mysticism and a defender of traditional Catholicism. He argued that liberal ideas since the 18th century had weakened Spain and urged a return to Catholic values and the heroic spirit of Don Quixote. His 1925 book La evolución de las ideas sobre la decadencia española was widely read on the theme of Spain’s decline.
A friend of Franco, Sainz Rodríguez helped convince Franco to join the 1936 coup led by Sanjurjo and Mola. He was close to General Mola and believed Franco’s control would be short-lived. In 1938 Franco appointed him Minister of Education; he pushed for education to be strongly influenced by the Church and opposed Falangist hard-liners who wanted a party-state. Franco supported him; some Falangists were imprisoned. He faced criticism from Falangists and asked to resign in 1939, and was replaced by José Ibáñez Martín.
After leaving government, he drifted from Franco but remained a committed monarchist. In 1943 he participated in a monarchist plot with Generals Aranda and Orgaz Yoldi to restore the monarchy, though it failed. He remained a trusted adviser to Juan, helping at times to steer Spain away from Axis involvement during World War II, through contact with British diplomat Samuel Hoare.
Sainz Rodríguez wrote many works on Spanish spirituality, including Historica de la literatura mística en España (1984) and a four-volume Antología de la literatura espiritual español (1980–1985). His autobiography, published after Franco’s death, portrays Franco as a bland, mediocre leader and reveals the strain in their relationship.
