Kenneth Carter (politician)
Kenneth Carter (September 9, 1933 – January 7, 2017) was an American politician from Rhode Island. A Democrat, he served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 31st District from January 1993 to January 2011. He lost the 2010 election to Republican Doreen Costa, by 54.2% to 45.8%.
Born in Scottsboro, Alabama, Carter served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from Jackson County High School, where he was Class President. He was married to Sylvia A. Clark, and they had four children: Kenneth, Michael, Mitchell, and Matthew.
Carter was a restaurateur who owned Carter's 19th Hole, a bar and restaurant at the North Kingstown Golf Course near Quonset Point. He also ran Shriner’s Hall in North Kingstown.
In the Rhode Island House, he worked on the Finance Committee and served as Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs during the 2009–2010 sessions.
He lived in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and died on January 7, 2017, in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, at age 83. Colleagues remembered him for fairness and civility.
