1910 East Dorset by-election
On 30 June 1910, East Dorset held a by-election to elect one Member of Parliament after Frederick Guest’s January 1910 election was declared void due to irregularities by his election agent. The Liberal candidate was Henry Guest, Frederick’s older brother, who had a military background but had not stood for Parliament before. The Conservative candidate was John Sanctuary Nicholson. East Dorset had been Liberal since 1904, and the by-election attracted a very high turnout.
Henry Guest won the seat for the Liberals with 6,967 votes (52.2%), while Nicholson received 6,375 votes (47.8%). Henry Guest did not defend the seat in the December 1910 general election; instead he was elected for Pembroke and Haverfordwest. Frederick Guest then returned to Parliament as Liberal MP.
