Pieter Dirkx (born 24 February 1984 in Antwerp) is a Belgian film director and painter. He started studying painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and later studied film at Sint-Lukas Brussels. His first short was The Geometry of Beetles (2009), about a lonely man who considers his framed insects his only friends. For his graduation project, he made Bento Monogatari, about Yvonne, a woman who tries to win her husband’s attention by pulling him into the world of Japanese pop culture. Bento Monogatari premiered in the Cinéfondation program at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and Dirkx was nominated for the Cinéfondation Award. The film also screened at several festivals, including Hamburg Short Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Brussels Film Festival, and Küstendorf Film and Music Festival. It won the CANVAS award and the SCAM/SACD Audience Award at Het Grote Ongeduld!. In 2011, Dirkx directed the music video for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s song “Maniac.” He is also known for producing The Geometry of Beetles (2009).
