Pagirinya Refugee Settlement
Pagirinya Refugee Settlement is a refugee camp in Eastern Adjumani District, Northern Uganda. It opened in June 2016 after Maaji Refugee Settlement reached capacity and began hosting refugees from South Sudan—more than 32,000 people.
Soon after opening, a cholera outbreak occurred due to dirty water and ongoing water problems. Latrines are in short supply, so some locals have resorted to open defecation. The low water supply and how water is handled increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
The settlement has schools to educate children. In 2016, 13 replenishment kits were given to Maaji Primary School, which has over 3,500 pupils. Pagirinya Settlement has three primary schools: Pagirinya Government Primary School and Pariginya 1 and 2 feeder primary schools, with about 4,721 refugees registered across them.
The area is organized to provide easy access to health centers and schools. Shelter ownership is: 77% by the head of the household, 12% by the spouse, and 11% jointly. Most households have land around their shelter (about 99%), with 3% having access to a separate plot and about 1% having no land.
