Oxynotus is a genus of sharks known as rough sharks. It is the only living group in the family Oxynotidae, and they live in deep waters of the Atlantic and western Pacific Oceans. They are small to medium sharks, about 0.5 to 1.5 meters long. Their bodies are compressed with a triangular cross‑section and they have two large dorsal fins with sharp spines; the first dorsal fin sits far forward above the head. Their skin is rough and prickly, and they have a luminous organ that produces light. A well-known species is the Caribbean roughshark, Oxynotus caribbaeus.
