Khumbo Kachali
Khumbo Hasting Kachali is a Malawian politician and businessman born in 1966. He has been the Member of Parliament for Mzimba South-West since 2004. He served as Vice President of Malawi from April 13, 2012, to May 31, 2014 under President Joyce Banda, becoming the first vice president from Malawi’s Northern Region. Before that, he held several ministerial roles: Industry, Science and Technology (2004–2006), Deputy Minister for Home Affairs and Internal Security (2006–2007), Youth Development and Sports (2007–2008), Health (2008–2009), and Transport and Public Infrastructure (2010). He was also vice president of the Malawi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and ran various businesses in Mzuzu and Mzimba. Educationally, he attended Phwezi Secondary School, earned a Diploma in Project Management from the University of Cambridge, and completed an MSc in Strategic Management at the University of Derby in 2011, with a thesis on the impact of multiparty politics in his Mzimba constituency. As vice president, he helped address health service issues and supported the return of essential drugs to public hospitals. He has been involved in political realignments for the ruling party and was considered a trusted adviser to President Banda. In 2017, he became the founding president of the Freedom Party.
