Orange-backed woodpecker
Orange-backed woodpecker (Chrysocolaptes validus) is a woodpecker in the family Picidae. It is found in southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia, Brunei, Sumatra, and Java. It is a forest specialist that lives mainly in the canopy.
Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1).
Taxonomy: It was described in 1825 by Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck from Java as Pic validus. It was later placed in its own genus Reinwardtipicus, and is now in Chrysocolaptes, a genus created by Edward Blyth in 1843. There are two recognised subspecies.
