Municipal Borough of Glossop
Glossop was a municipal borough in Derbyshire, England, from 1866 to 1974. It was created under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. In 1934 it expanded when part of the parish of Charlesworth joined the borough. In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, Glossop Borough was abolished and merged with Buxton, New Mills, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Tintwistle to form the High Peak district.
Area and population:
- In 1911 the borough covered about 12.35 square kilometres (about 3,052 acres) and had about 21,688 residents.
- By 1963 it covered about 13.45 square kilometres (about 3,323 acres). In 1961 the population was about 17,500.
Government: The borough was governed by Glossop Borough Council, based in Glossop.
