Operation Kilt
Operation Kilt is a Dad’s Army episode from Series 2, about 30 minutes long. It first aired on 1 March 1969.
Plot summary:
The Walmington-on-Sea platoon must defend the church hall from a Highlanders training unit. Captain Mainwaring leads a basic drill session when a few rowdy boys and Mrs. Pike (who brings back a rifle bolt she cleaned in the sink) interrupt. Mainwaring injures his back during toe touches, and Captain Ogilvie of the Highland unit arrives, explaining the exercise: the Highlanders will try to capture the platoon’s HQ starting at 10 pm the next night, and a painted system will mark who’s dead, wounded, or captured.
Ogilvie tests the men’s competence by punching Pike in the stomach, but Pike doesn’t flinch. It turns out the punch hit Pike’s rifle bolt tucked in his vest. The platoon decides to spy on the Highlanders at a local farm. Walker and Frazer borrow a pantomime cow costume, but Mainwaring doubts the plan and they end up bruised after a run-in with a bull.
Sergeant Wilson suggests a Trojan Horse using a haycart with a man inside. Pike, however, develops hay fever, so Corporal Jones goes as the spy and learns the Highlanders plan to move early through the woods toward Walmington-on-Sea. That night, Mainwaring rigs the woods with Tarzan‑style man-traps. Seven traps work; when Jones leads the last man into the eighth, he is caught himself. While the rescue descends into chaos, Ogilvie turns up as the last free Highlander and, declaring everyone “dead,” tries to grab their paint but stumbles into the final trap.
The episode ends with Mainwaring and Wilson reacting with disbelief as they discover what Scotsmen really wear under their kilts.
