Bertram Cooley
Bertram Clifford Cooley (1874–17 August 1935) was a South African cricketer who played for Natal from 1894 to 1907. Born in Durban, he was a hard-hitting but inconsistent batsman and a useful bowler. In 19 first-class matches he scored 564 runs at an average of 20.14, with two centuries and a top score of 126 not out, and he took 15 wickets with best figures of 4/34. He toured England with the South African team in 1901 and made a notable 126 not out at Cambridge University while batting at number nine, though he did not shine in other games. In his final first-class innings, the 1906-07 Currie Cup against Western Province, he batted at number ten, came in when Natal were 100 for 8, and scored 113 to help Natal win by 165 runs, sharing a 217-run ninth-wicket stand with Dave Nourse. He died in Durban on 17 August 1935.
