Noemi Procopio
Noemi Procopio is a forensic scientist and Research Senior Fellow based at the University of Central Lancashire (UK). She was born in Sommariva del Bosco, Italy, and has built a international career in forensic science, focusing on taphonomy—the study of how bodies decompose after death—and proteomics to study bone proteins. Her work helps estimate age and time of death, including cases involving submerged corpses.
Procopio studied at the University of Turin (Università degli Studi di Torino) and the University of Manchester in the UK. Her 2018 research, Proteome Taphonomy: Biomolecular Investigations into the Process of Decay for Forensic and Archaeological Applications, reflects her focus on how molecular changes reveal forensic timelines.
In 2019 she received a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for the project Forens-OMICS, a cross-disciplinary program applying omics sciences to forensic ageing investigations. Since 2023 she has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In 2024 she was appointed Program Chair of the AAFS Pathology/Biology Section, and in 2025 she became Section Secretary; she also serves as Co-Chair of the International Affairs Committee of the AAFS.
Procopio’s work spans biotechnology, forensic proteomics, microbiology and metabolomics, and she is associated with the University of Central Lancashire.
