Niamh Kavanagh
Niamh Kavanagh, born 13 February 1968 in Dublin, is an Irish singer best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 with the song “In Your Eyes” for Ireland. The victory came at the Millstreet venue in County Cork, helping Ireland achieve its second of three consecutive Eurovision wins. She returned to Eurovision in 2010, performing “It’s for You” in Oslo; she reached the final, finishing 23rd with 25 points. Among Eurovision fans, she is highly regarded for her vocal talent.
Kavanagh grew up with a musical family; her father was a singer, and she was inspired by Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Bonnie Raitt. She sang on the 1991 film soundtrack for The Commitments and won the 1993 National Song Contest with “In Your Eyes,” earning 118 points. After Eurovision, she recorded an album in Nashville produced by John Jennings and later stepped back from music to spend more time with her children. She has remained connected to Eurovision, serving as Ireland’s spokesperson in 2008 and 2023 and participating in various national events. She is married to Paul Megahey and they have two sons, Jack and Tom, and lived in Carrickfergus for many years.
