List of African American newspapers in Wisconsin

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

This is a list of African American newspapers that have been published in Wisconsin, including both current and historical titles. Before 1900, Wisconsin had fewer than 1,000 African Americans, so the growth of Black newspapers was slow. The first African American newspaper in Wisconsin was the Wisconsin Afro-American, launched in 1892 by George A. Brown and Thomas H. Jones (Brown was the son of Bishop John Mifflin Brown). The first newspaper published by an African American in Wisconsin was the Wisconsin Labor Advocate, published by George Edwin Taylor for workers of all races from 1886 to 1887. Today, notable African American newspapers in Wisconsin include The Madison Times, The Milwaukee Courier, The Milwaukee Times, and The Milwaukee Community Journal. The first Black newspaper in Madison was founded by J. Anthony Josey, who was posthumously recognized in 1998.
