Next Sri Lankan parliamentary election
Next Sri Lankan parliamentary election is due by 21 February 2030. The 225-seat Parliament determines the government.
Key points:
- Structure and voting: 196 members are elected from 22 multi-seat districts using open-list proportional representation with a 5% threshold (voters rank up to three candidates). The remaining 29 seats come from a national list chosen by parties.
- 2024 election results: National People's Power (NPP) won a landslide with 159 seats (two-thirds). Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) won 40 seats; New Democratic Front (NDF) 5 seats; Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) collapsed to 3 seats.
- Prime minister: Harini Amarasuriya was appointed prime minister after Dissanayake’s presidential win and was reappointed on 18 November 2024.
- Context: The NPP campaigned on anti-corruption, social welfare and economic revival, drawing shifts in Tamil and Muslim votes in the north and east.
- Dissolution and election timing: The president can dissolve Parliament after two years and six months from its first sitting or by a parliamentary resolution. A decree to dissolve can be issued from 21 May 2027. If not dissolved, Parliament automatically dissolves five years after its first meeting, and elections must be held within three months. The 17th Parliament began on 21 November 2024, so if not dissolved, it would automatically dissolve on 21 November 2029, making the latest possible election 21 February 2030.
