IGA Supermarkets
Independent Grocers of Australia (IGA) is an Australian supermarket chain owned by Metcash. Each IGA store is independently owned and operated, even though the IGA brand is part of Metcash’s Food & Grocery division. IGA competes with Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths and is the fourth-largest supermarket chain in Australia.
The IGA brand began in 1988 when Davids Holdings turned ten stores into IGA. By 2019, IGA had about 7% of Australia’s grocery market, and by January 2020 there were around 1,400 IGA stores nationwide. IGA stores are often in smaller suburbs or remote areas where larger supermarkets aren’t nearby, and some offer a curated selection of artisan products.
In 2018 IGA refreshed its look to emphasize a local feel, changing the slogan to “Where the locals matter.” Stores range from small convenience shops to large full-service supermarkets and liquor stores. Metcash also provides two store-brand lines for IGA and other independent supermarkets: a generic everyday brand and a higher-quality brand that links with the IGA Community Chest program.
