New Swears
New Swears is a four-piece Canadian band from Ottawa that plays garage punk and power pop. They formed in 2012 at the Fun Boy Club House. The original members were Sammy J. Scorpion, Beej Eh, Nick Nofun, and Scru Bar. In 2018 Scru Bar left, and Stoney joined on drums; Nick Nofun moved from drums to bass; Sammy J. Scorpion and Beej Eh continued on guitar, with S-Mike occasionally adding keyboard.
Their first release, Funny Isn't Real, came out in 2013 as a cassette on Bruised Tongue Records and later on vinyl from Dirt Cult and Bachelor Records. Their second LP Junkfood Forever, Bedtime Whatever followed in 2014. The band signed with Dine Alone Records in October 2016 and released the singles Brand New Spot and Sugar Heavy Metal that month.
Their third full-length LP, And the Magic of Horses, was released in June 2017. In December 2017 they released two singles, Illuminati Knights and Happy Birthday, with all proceeds going to skate-related youth charities For Pivots Sake and Girls + Skate 613.
In March 2019 a video for Angel leaked online ahead of the band's next album, Night Mirror, which was released on June 13, 2019. Two singles from Night Mirror, Bon Voyage and Rolling Stone, were released in advance.
New Swears have toured widely, including their first Europe tour in fall 2014, Ottawa Bluesfest in 2015, and appearances at Arboretum Festival, Maker Space North and Ottawa Explosion. A 2017 Canada/US tour and a Europe tour followed, with 2018 bringing more Canadian shows and a stop at Elora Riverfest.
The band is known for high-energy live performances with confetti cannons, silly string, costumes and wigs, and even on-stage human pyramids.
