Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway

The Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway (VS&PR) was created by the Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway Act 1858 to build a line from the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway’s Battersea terminus to a new Victoria station in Westminster. The plan included building the Grosvenor Bridge over the Thames and connecting with the West London and Crystal Palace Railway to improve transport between lines south of the Thames and London’s western districts. The company later leased its lines and stations to the LB&SCR and to the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LC&DR), but it remained a separate company until 14 December 1922, when it was absorbed by the South Eastern Railway under the Railways Act 1921, just before the formation of the Southern Railway in 1923.

Key background and changes: The VS&PR aimed to give the LB&SCR a West End terminus, while three other railways—the Great Western Railway (GWR), the London and North Western Railway (L&NWR), and the East Kent Railway (which would become the LC&DR)—used the misnamed Pimlico station, actually located in Battersea. The act authorized a capital of £1 million, with the LB&SCR subscribing about 45%. The line was managed with provisions for perpetual rents to be paid by the LC&DR and GWR, and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway was to oversee it.

Opening and later development: The LB&SCR side of Victoria station opened in the Grosvenor Canal basin on 1 October 1860 and was leased to the LB&SCR. Parliament rejected a proposed amalgamation with VS&PR, so the lines and bridges were widened and separated to accommodate the main users in 1862–63. The LC&DR and GWR station at Victoria opened on 25 August 1862 and also provided running powers for the L&NWR.

End of VS&PR: The VS&PR continued as a separate company until it was absorbed by the South Eastern Railway on 14 December 1922, under the Railways Act 1921, before the creation of the Southern Railway on 1 January 1923.
