Nemo (arcade game)
Nemo is a 1990 Capcom arcade side-scrolling game based on the film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. In the story, Nemo travels with a circus to Slumberland to meet King Morpheus, with his friend Flip along for the ride. They battle through a danger-filled Slumberland to find the Nightmare King, who has kidnapped Morpheus and Princess Camille. After storming the Nightmare King’s castle, Nemo defeats him and restores peace to Slumberland.
In the game, up to two players can play. Player 1 is Nemo, who uses the king’s scepter, and Player 2 is Flip, who wields his own cane. The game has seven stages where you destroy waves of enemies. You can climb walls and ladders, and enemies can be defeated with melee attacks, thrown projectiles, or by jumping on them. Defeating enemies in quick succession increases your score. Bosses require repeated attacks. Power-ups include sweet foods to restore health, and yashichi items grant limited super attacks that shoot projectiles and deal more damage.
Nemo released in December 1990 for Capcom’s CP System arcade hardware. It was shown at the 1991 UK Amusement Trades Exhibition International. A Capcom Power System Changer version was planned but never released.
Reception was mixed-to-positive: Computer and Video Games gave it 87%, praising graphics and sound but noting it wasn’t very challenging. Retro Gamer praised the colors, creativity, and solid gameplay, though some still prefer the NES version. The One found it entertaining and compared it to Ghouls ’n Ghosts.
