Near-threatened species

Near-threatened means a species is not yet at risk of extinction, but it could become threatened in the near future. The IUCN assigns this label to species that need regular reevaluation because their numbers or living area could decline.

Since 2001, conservation-dependent species are no longer treated as a separate group. In the old system, Conservation Dependent and Near Threatened were both under the Low Risk category. If a species was last assessed before 2001, it might still show an older label, but today it would usually be called Near Threatened (NT).
