Mexican Council on Foreign Relations
Mexican Council on Foreign Affairs (COMEXI) is a nonprofit, independent forum in Mexico City that studies Mexico’s role in the world and how international events affect the country. It was founded on November 22, 2001. It is funded entirely by its members and is not part of the government.
The council is led by President of the board Luis Rubio. Past presidents include Fernando Solana, Andrés Rozental, and Jaime Zabludovsky. COMEXI has more than 450 members from different sectors, who participate through the Ordinary Program and three special programs: Corporate Program (for leading companies), Institutional Program (bringing together foreign embassies in Mexico, international organizations, and research/teaching centers), and the Term-Member Program (to develop future leaders).
COMEXI publishes materials such as the biannual Mexico and the World survey, produced with the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), and a collection of papers on international affairs. It also participates in conferences, study groups, and workshops on topics important to Mexico and its international partners.
The council has partnerships with several U.S. and Latin American organizations, including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Council of the Americas, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. It has signed memoranda of understanding with the Institute Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil and the Indian Council of World Affairs.
Since 2003, COMEXI and the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC, have run the Stays Academic Program for Research in Public Policy, sending about three specialists each year to study Mexico–U.S. bilateral issues. By 2013, COMEXI was active in radio and television analysis and had more than 30 members in the press. The organization’s website offers articles and research on global issues, and its work is divided into regional and thematic areas.
