National roads in Poland: a simple guide

- What are they?
National roads are the main public roads in Poland that are controlled by the central government. They include motorways and expressways, as well as other important routes that connect different parts of the country, link to border crossings, or serve as alternatives to toll roads.

- Who runs them?
The national roads network is managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

- Other roads in Poland
Roads that are not part of the national network are managed by local governments at the voivodeship (region), powiat (county), and gmina (municipality) levels. These include voivodeship roads, powiat roads, and gmina roads.

- How many national roads are there?
There are currently 96 national roads (numbers 1–68 and 70–97). Since 2014, new national roads 89, 95, 96, and 97 have been added. In 2011 the total length was about 18,801 kilometers. A 2008 GDDKiA report noted that about a quarter of national roads can handle 11.5 tonnes per axle.

- Changes to the network
In 2016 national road 69 was removed from the national roads network. In January 2020, national road 98 was downgraded and removed from the network.

- About the road list
The national roads list covers many routes across Poland, including connections to neighboring countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Belarus, Ukraine) and links between major Polish cities. The full list is detailed and organized by each road’s route and endpoints.
