Shire of Waroona
Shire of Waroona is a local government area in the Peel region of Western Australia. It sits between Mandurah and Harvey, about 110 kilometres south of Perth.
The shire covers about 835 square kilometres and has a population of around 4,234 people (2021). The council seat and main town is Waroona.
History: It began as the Drakesbrook Road District on 29 April 1898, after splitting from the Murray Road District. The area kept the Drakesbrook name for a few years after the town was renamed. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Waroona under the Local Government Act 1960, which turned road districts into shires.
Governance: The shire has eight councillors and no wards, representing the whole area. The Shire President is Mike Walmsley.
Heritage: As of 2023, 38 places in the Shire are heritage-listed, including four on the State Register of Heritage Places.
