Selfish Love (Jessie Ware song)
Selfish Love is a song by British singer Jessie Ware from her third album Glasshouse. It was released as the second single by Island Records on August 31, 2017. The track runs 3 minutes and 54 seconds.
Written by Jessie Ware, Ross Golan, Ryan Tedder, Ammar Malik, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, and Happy Perez, it was produced by Happy Perez, Benny Blanco, and Cashmere Cat. The song premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show.
Ware has said the song came from a difficult songwriting session in December 2016 with Benny Blanco. Blanco shared a chorus idea from Ryan Tedder, which helped inspire the track. Ware described Selfish Love as a song that reminds her why she loves singing and hoped listeners would hear it even at the end of summer.
Musically, Selfish Love slows things down into a sultry, bass-driven vibe with a subtle Latin feel. Critics described it as a sultry, modern take with hints of bossa nova, and noted its Lana Del Rey–like lyrics. It’s seen as a more intimate counterpart to her earlier single Midnight.
The music video, directed by Tom Beard and shot in Majorca, acts as a prequel to the Midnight video. It features Ware as one half of a couple in a strained relationship with a cheating partner, set in a luxurious setting. The video forms the first part of a two-part story, with Midnight serving as the second part.
