National Folklore Board (Ghana)
National Folklore Board (Ghana) is a statutory government body that protects and promotes Ghanaian folklore. Folklore in Ghana means the traditional beliefs and customs of a community, passed down through generations and preserved by ethnic groups or Ghanaian authors. The Board reports to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. It is established under the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690) to administer, register, promote and protect Ghanaian expressions of folklore for the President and the people of Ghana. The Board includes a Chairperson, a Copyright Administrator, one member nominated by the National Commission on Culture, and six other members. Folklore is largely oral tradition and includes intellectual and spiritual aspects, such as customs, dramatic arts, festivals, music, stories, and proverbs. The Board has partnered with MTN to digitize Ghanaian folklore. It functions as a state agency to manage intellectual property and folklore branding in Ghana.
