Namo Bharat
Namo Bharat, previously known as RapidX, is India’s first regional rapid transit system in the National Capital Region (NCR). Operated by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), it is designed to replace the old MEMU trains with a faster, more comfortable regional service. The first passenger service began on 20 October 2023.
The system runs on three Phase-I corridors—Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat, and Delhi-Alwar—that all meet at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi. The corridors are interoperable, so trains can move between them without passengers changing trains, making travel across the region easier.
Namo Bharat trains are six-coach sets designed for about 450 passengers. Each train has a dedicated business-class coach, a separate women’s coach, and premium lounges at stations for business travelers. The interiors are air-conditioned with Wi‑Fi and ample overhead luggage space, and the system is built for universal accessibility and safety, including CCTV cameras and platform screen doors.
The service uses advanced signaling with ETCS Level 2 over a private LTE network, developed in collaboration between Nokia and Alstom, to provide real-time train location and high safety. There is also a plan to use the corridors for cargo during off-peak hours. Trains can reach up to 180 km/h, while typical speeds are around 100 km/h, and modern slab-track technology helps ensure a smooth ride.
The trains are designed with a lightweight stainless-steel body and aerodynamic features for efficient regional travel. They are powered by a 25 kV overhead system, and maintenance depots, including one at Duhai in Uttar Pradesh, support operations. Deutsche Bahn operates and maintains the Delhi–Meerut corridor for 12 years under a contract worth about ₹1,500 crore (roughly US$178 million).
Namo Bharat’s name means “bow to India,” a branding change from RapidX in 2023. Some critics note that the term “Namo” is also associated with the Prime Minister’s nickname, adding a political dimension to the rebranding.
Overall, Namo Bharat aims to reduce road congestion and pollution by giving commuters a fast, convenient, and seamless public transit option that connects Delhi with nearby towns and cities while integrating with airports, major railway stations, bus terminals, and Delhi Metro lines.
