Nahshon Battalion is an Israeli infantry unit trained for urban warfare. It patrols the Nablus area in the West Bank and is part of the Kfir Brigade. The battalion’s motto is “Be first, Nahshon,” after the Prince of Judah. Nahshon began as a company in November 1998 and was formed as a battalion in 1999–2000. Its founding commander was Lt. Col. Yoram Loredo. During the Second Intifada it lost six soldiers, including four officers. Since the 1990s, it has been one of several battalions that control specific areas in the West Bank to prevent suicide bombings and maintain order. The current commander is Lt. Col. Tamir Shalom.
