Nutrition Program for the Elderly (NPE) helps older Americans get healthy meals. It is part of the Older Americans Act (Title III). The program provides two kinds of support:

- Basic grants to run nutrition programs for the elderly, such as meals-on-wheels and congregate dining.
- Extra money or food help for each meal served (per-meal cash or commodity assistance).

The basic grants come from the annual federal budget to the Department of Health and Human Services and are distributed to states by a formula. The per-meal cash or commodity assistance comes from the annual budget for the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). States can choose cash or commodity aid, and most states choose cash.
