Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Spain
- Role and location: The ambassador is the official representative of the Russian president and government to the king and government of Spain. Based at the Embassy of Russia in Madrid, with a Consulate-General in Barcelona and honorary consuls in Seville, Burgos, Valencia, Vigo, and Las Palmas (Canary Islands). Since 1995, the ambassador to Spain is also accredited to Andorra.
- Current ambassador: Yury Klimenko, in office since 18 November 2022. The post is appointed by the President of Russia and serves at the president’s pleasure.
- History in brief: Diplomatic relations began in 1722, with the first ambassador Sergey Golitsyn. Relations were interrupted several times (1730; 1733–1735; 1740–1748; 1799; 1812; 1835) and later restored. The mission became an embassy in 1899. After the 1917 Revolution, relations were severed. The Soviet Union re-established relations with the Second Spanish Republic on 28 June 1933 and supported the Republicans during the Civil War. Relations were restored after Franco’s death and Spain’s transition to democracy; Sergey Bogomolov became ambassador on 19 February 1977. Following the USSR’s dissolution in 1991, Spain recognized the Russian Federation; Igor Ivanov served until 1994, and since then ambassadors have continued. On 13 June 1995, Russia established relations with Andorra, with Viktor Komplektov appointed also as ambassador to Andorra.
