Magical Hat is a Japanese anime series that aired on Fuji TV from October 1989 to July 1990. Created by Yōji Katakura and produced by Studio Pierrot, it ran for 33 episodes and was part of a larger media project with Sega.

The story takes place 63,000 years after the legendary hero Magical Hat sealed the Underworld on Usontō Island. In the present, a boy named Hat travels to the island with his archaeologist father. An earthquake breaks the seal, and rival king Aleph and his scheming ally Guwaru the Ziarc fight for control. Guwaru splits Usontō into seven islands. Inside the Underworld, Hat meets a statue that carries the spirit of Magical Hat and learns he is descended from the hero. Hat becomes the new Magical Hat, using a magic turban to battle Guwaru with help from Hot-ken, Grandpa Tau, Spin, and Robogg, and to reunify the islands and restore Aleph.

There was also a Mega Drive video game based on the series, Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibōken, released in 1990 by Vic Tokai. It’s a colorful platformer where Hat travels seven islands, defeats enemies, and collects power-ups. Because Sega couldn’t keep the license outside Japan, the game was later re-released in the West in 1991 as Decap Attack with a different story and characters but similar gameplay.
