Popstars (Brazilian TV series)
Popstars is a Brazilian reality TV series created by Jonathan Dowling. It aired on the SBT channel and ran for two seasons from April 27, 2002, to November 22, 2003. The show was based on the Popstars international format and was produced by RGB. It was a prime-time program meant to compete with Rede Globo’s popular reality shows Casa dos Artistas and No Limite. An extra program, Muito Mais Popstars, aired in 2002 on SBT and Disney Channel Brazil, with Disney showing the episodes two days later.
The 2002 season focused on forming female pop groups. The standout moment came from Rouge, a group that finished second but went on to become very successful, with hit songs like Ragatanga (Asereje), Um Anjo Veio me Falar, Não dá pra Resistir, and Beijo Molhado. Ragatanga is a Portuñol version of The Ketchup Song and sold over 2 million copies in Brazil. Rouge even had a concert on Disney Channel Brazil on September 1, 2002. One contestant, Marjorie Estiano, who was eliminated early, later became a well-known actress on Rede Globo in shows such as Páginas da Vida, Duas Caras, Caminho das Índias, and A Vida da Gente.
Due to the show's success, SBT created a male version, which produced the boy band Br'oz, who also achieved success. After two seasons, Popstars in Brazil was discontinued.
