Muktodhara is a 2012 Bengali prison drama directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. The film follows inmates at Presidency Jail who are given a chance to reform through culture therapy. Niharika Chatterjee, wife of a powerful public prosecutor, meets Brij Narayan Dutta, the new inspector of correctional cells. He asks her to help stage a play with the prisoners to aid their rehabilitation, and she agrees on the condition that her husband not be told.

They plan to stage Rabindranath Tagore’s Valmiki Pratibha with the inmates, making Yusuf Mohammad, a notorious criminal, the lead. Through practice, the prisoners begin to change. They even plan to escape during the play, but guilt and their growing humanity lead them to stay and finish the performance.

The story is tied to real-life culture-therapy programs that have helped many inmates. Nigel Akkara, who plays a lead role in the film, is a former convict whose life was transformed by such therapy. Culture therapy—art, dance, and theatre used to reform prisoners—was started in West Bengal by IPS officer BD Sharma and dancer Alokananda Roy. Muktodhara is considered the first Indian film about culture therapy. It was released on 3 August 2012 and became a hit, praised for its emotional storytelling and social message. The cast includes Rituparna Sengupta, Nigel Akkara, Debshankar Haldar, and Bratya Basu.
