Mosquitia–Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast mangroves
Mosquitia–Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast mangroves are a mangrove ecosystem along the Caribbean shores of Nicaragua and Honduras, including offshore islands such as Big Corn Island (about 70 km east of Nicaragua). The area covers about 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles) across Honduras and Nicaragua and is considered relatively stable. The mangrove community includes red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus), and another red mangrove (Rhizophora harrisonii), with occasional piñuelo mangrove (Pelliciera rhizophorae).
