Bike Parade
Bike Parade is the tenth and final episode of South Park’s 22nd season. It aired on December 12, 2018, and is the second part of a two-episode finale about a new Amazon fulfillment center opening in town.
The center’s opening leads to a workers’ strike, threatening deliveries for the town’s Christmas bike parade. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny want to win the parade, but Kenny withdraws from the parade to protest commercialism. Jeff Bezos is depicted as an alien-like figure who watches the town through Amazon Echo devices. He orders the kidnapping of a strike leader, Josh Carter, which causes chaos.
As the center hires workers and closes local businesses, Randy’s Tegridy Farms gets involved by selling marijuana to stressed strikers, and Butters enjoys a new bike. Towelie suggests using e-scooters for deliveries. The boys try to cancel the parade, but the town learns the center has forced many shops to close, and Mayor McDaniels feels guilty.
Santa shows up briefly, then leaves after learning that Mr. Hankey was driven from town for past tweets. The kids realize they can’t force outrage, and they confront Bezos at City Hall. Bezos argues the parade boosted Amazon, and tries to intimidate Kenny, but the townspeople rise up, quit the fulfillment center, and expel Bezos’s team.
The bike parade goes ahead as planned, with Cartman pulling Kenny’s coffin on a bike, and life in South Park returns to normal.
Reception was mixed to positive. IGN gave it 6.9/10, noting many season references and funny moments but some metafictional elements that didn’t land for all viewers. Forbes called it insightful and clever, praising its look at outrage culture and modern technology. The A.V. Club gave it a B+, praising how it tied together various storylines and joking moments, especially the scene with Bezos’s former employees. The episode also comments on capitalism, anxiety, and the use of drugs as a distraction.
