Mirgasim Cheshmazer
Mirgasim Cheshmazer (1920–2000) was an Azerbaijani scientist and politician. He led the Azerbaijan Democratic Party as its chairman from 1954 to 1959 and was awarded the Sattarkhan order.
During the Azerbaijan People's Government, he served as the commandant of the Tabriz loyalist units, assistant to Sayyed Ja'far Pishevari, and chairman of the Azerbaijan Radio Committee. He joined the Tabriz Committee of the Tudeh Party in 1944 and later became a member of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party.
From December 10, 1945, to January 15, 1946, he commanded the Tabriz loyalist units, and from January to June 1946 he was Pishevari’s assistant. On April 26, 1946, he headed the Tabriz radio station near the Azerbaijan Radio Committee. On September 3, 1946, the first anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party, he was awarded the Sattarkhan order for his work in the democratic movement. In 1946, he helped form the Babak Resistance Unit to oppose Tehran’s army entering Azerbaijan.
After the Azerbaijan People's Government collapsed, he moved to Baku. There he defended his academic work on the party and earned a doctoral degree in history. He conducted research at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in the Southern Azerbaijan History department. In 1954 he was elected president (chairman) of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party, a position he held until 1959. He also took part in the early stages of the Azerbaijan National Liberation Movement in 1988. He died in 2000.
